How to test the battery of my device?

General note

All ICARUS products are equipped with Lithium Ion batteries. These types of batteries are characterized by high capacity, quick charging and a long lifetime. However, it is important to know that the maximum capacity of this battery is only reached after 5 complete charge-discharge cycles.

This means that the capacity of the battery can only be judged once these 5 cycles are completed. One cycle means:

  • using the appliance until the battery is completely depleted
  • charging the appliance until the device is fully charged. Depending on the method used, this can take up to 5 hours*

*=ICARUS e-readers can be charged either via the USB cable connected to a computer. This charging method is relatively slow and can take up to 5 hours. When using the optional ICARUS AC USB adapter, charging time is reduced a lot and can be close to 3 hours.

Ereaders specifics

Page flips are defined as "screen refreshes". This is important cause the software installed in the device shows pages as defined by the publisher or ebook metadata but the actual number of screens represented by a page depends on the font size used. Therefore advertised number of page flips always indicates number of screen refreshes.


One can easily check how ebook pages translates to page flips opening a TXT file. The TXT viewer installed in Icarus Go, for instance, will display the page number that you are reading and the number of page flips (screens) which will take to read the 1 whole page is displayed between brackets. The number of page flips for a screen can vary also depending on the text in each ebook page.


Also TXT files are widely used for testing batteries among manufacturers to estimate advertised page flips. The reason why TXT ebooks are used for the test is because different formats require different memory usage and more memory/functions consumes more power. Also, TXT viewers are available open source and the memory usage can be controlled better than proprietary viewers like Adobe Digital Editions mobile edition for instance (this program is installed into every ereader compatible with Adobe DRM).


The standard testing procedure (in the factory) would be as follows:

• Batteries go through the complete charge and discharge cycle for 5 times.
• All options that consume battery are then turned off (e.g. wireless, screen rotation, other sensors)
• A long TXT ebook file is chosen for testing. In our case we use War and Peace from Tolstoi.
• On the 6th cycle with a full battery and operator opens a TXT ebook and clicks pages in batches of 100 clicks until the battery is over. There is no waiting time to read the page. Pages are just turned until the device is out of battery.
• The stand by time is then measured On the 7th battery charge.
• The advertised number of page flips is then calculated assuming a user reading 4 TXT pages per minute times the maximum stand by time. This number must always be smaller than the maximum of page flips. ).

Icarus Go Specifics

In the case of Icarus Go testing requires a bit less effort for the user than in the factory. A suggested test method would be:

• Make sure battery is full (LED indicator should turn blue when connected to USB power).

• Open War and Peace from Tolstoi. Download from here
• All options that consume battery are then turned off (in this case screen rotation)
• Turn the Browse Mode to Automatic in the reading menu and set the flip time to 30 seconds.

A good result of this test is stand by time between 20 to 25 hours turning pages continuously.

Less than 10 hours would be a device/battery with problems.

Between 10-20 hours means that the battery life is not optimal. Battery life is mostly influenced by charging behaviour by the end-user. Frequent short charges will reduce the battery capacity of the device.
